Delightful Hungarian Wax Peppers

Patty’s Peppers in St. Petersburg, Florida, cultivates a mix of Hungarian Hot Wax peppers and sweet peppers, which are rich in flavor and texture. More savory than many common peppers, Hungarian Wax peppers are not widely available. The vibrant color, mixture of sweet and heat, and crisp texture gives our peppers unique flavor and appeal. Patty’s peppers are grown in South/Central Ohio’s Hocking Hills. Here, the rich fertile soil, warm days yet cool nights, and lower humidity make this an ideal growing region. We allow our peppers to ripen to their fullest spectrum of beautiful colors and sweet hot flavors.

Patty’s Peppers History

Patty acquired her recipe in 1963 from her new neighbor, Jane Schiavone. They became inseparable, lifelong friends, and Miss Jane became my eventual Godmother. Cooking was a passion they both shared and many of Patty’s great dishes are attributed to Jane.  Our favorite, and the inspiration behind Patty’s Peppers, was for her ‘Italian style peppers in oil’. Jane’s mother acquired this amazing recipe from a friend living in the Abruzzo, Italy region. Here, it’s common for Abruzzese chefs and families to use a variety of peppers and oils to serve with their meals. Lucky for us, Patty adopted this strategy and served her perfectly pickled precious peppers with virtually every meal.

For years, I have returned to Ohio in late summer to join Mama in canning hundreds of jars of peppers. I’ve given them to friends and have always loved the positive reaction. But I never had enough to go around. This led me to a labor of love to produce Mama’s peppers on a larger scale with her blessing – Patty’s Peppers.
Uncle Joe’s Recipe
When Uncle Joe tried Mama Patty’s original recipe he loved them but he was not to be outdone by his sister. Starting with perfectly grown Hungarian hot wax peppers, fresh garlic and spices, Uncle Joe mixed in a little of his ‘secret sauce’. The result? Patty’s hot peppers with Uncle Joe’s sweet finish. It will begin nice and sweet, but you’ll feel that heat!
Mom’s Original Recipe

This ‘Old World’ Italian recipe combines Hungarian hot and sweet wax peppers marinating in a zesty, garlicky sauce. There is an unmistakable spice and tang, but combined with the peppers inherent sweetness, this fine condiment makes for a truly unforgettable taste. This unique flavor kept pepper lovers knocking on Patty’s door for more than 50 years.
